A group of illuminated signs spanning the top of the Presidio Tunnel appeared in 2023, connecting downtown San Francisco with the Golden Gate Bridge. There are a total of three illuminated signs, located just before the exit of the Presidio Tunnel towards the Golden Gate Bridge, visible and recognizable from a distance of 700 feet. This is perhaps the first and most innovative, visually striking wayfinding sign to appear in the United States, and transportation departments should promote its use more! It's so safe and beautiful! exclaimed passing drivers. In the past, California and many other states in the United States would install external lighting fixtures on wayfinding signs on ordinary highways and freeways to compensate for the difficulty of visibility at night and in low visibility conditions. Those fixtures consume a lot of electricity and cannot make the sign face uniformly clear. This set of self-illuminating signs in the Presidio Tunnel represents the latest application of active lighting technology.
