Illuminating Crosswalks to Enhance Pedestrian Safety on Vancouver’s Roads
In recent years, many roadways in the Vancouver area have adopted internally illuminated (self-lighting) traffic signs that remain exceptionally visible at night. These “Pedestrian Warning” signs are installed above crosswalks, designed as box-type structures similar to lightboxes. LED lighting is integrated inside the sign, and additional lighting is directed downward to illuminate the pavement.
After dark, the pedestrian warning symbol on the sign lights up vividly, while the white crosswalk stripes below are brightly illuminated. This allows both drivers and pedestrians to see the crossing clearly from a long distance, improving safety for all road users.
Unlike traditional reflective traffic signs, which rely on vehicle headlights to be seen, internally illuminated signs remain visible on their own. They provide clearer recognition over longer distances, even in rain or fog, significantly enhancing nighttime visibility and pedestrian protection.
